How can you interview a realtor to see if they are a good fit? What questions can you ask up front to set expectations and avoid headaches ?

We have complied a list of questions one should ask any realtor they work with before signing an exclusive right to sell agreement.

  • Are you a Broker? Or a Sales Agent?

    • Sales agents can be better than brokers if they do more volume, but at the end of the day if there are issues - you sign the agreement to work with the Broker. The sales agent is only a designated agent. The Broker is who gets involved when the big issues happen so you want to make sure they are competent.​

  • Do you only list as exclusive right to sell? 

    • If so what is the timeframe on the contract? When does it expire?

    • Do you cover your brokerage transaction fee or do I? Are there any additional fees that may show up at closing associated with your service?

    • What is your total commission you are charging to list my home? What are your offering the buyer agent as a commission? What happens if someone who does not have a realtor wants to buy my home?

    • In the case we are not a good fit, how do would we go about releasing the agreement?

  • How will you market my property? Will you do an open house? List it on more than just your Multiple listing service?

  • How many transactions have you sold on average in my area the last year? If you haven't sold a lot of homes how many people have you helped to buy?

  • What does your schedule look like? Will I primarily be working with you or a team member?

  • On average how long does it take your clients to sell a home right now?

  • What comes standard in your listing package? Do I need to find and pay for a photographer, stager, or cleaning services?

  • Do you have any title companies or lawyers you would recommend I work with?
