HOW TO
MAKE
MOVING SEAMLESS

General info:

  • Make sure that you have someone you trust (realtor, friend, future co-worker) physically go through whatever home you are moving into before signing a rental contract or closing a home. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard of a resident moving into a home and the pictures were nothing like the actual listing, or it smelled of animal urine and was unlivable. If you cannot find anyone- A local realtor would do it for you for free, even if you are not buying a home or they don't do rentals just for the "connection" and potential you may use them to buy in the future.

  • If you are getting reimbursed from your company that is moving you for costs, keep in mind if they write you a check the tax reform act of 2017 makes that check count as income and IS taxable. So depending on your tax bracket you want to ask your employer to cover 30% more than what the actual moving costs will be or else you will be paying some out of your pocket to move if you use all the reimbursement.

  • If using a driving or moving service, ask them if only your stuff will be in a truck, or if they will be stopping and filling with others stuff. Important to understand this before hand for mix ups in possessions and delayed moving times.

  • International moving companies are hit and miss. Proceed with caution. Looking for a local moving company is usually your best bet if you want reliability.

  • Expect the moving process to take 2 weeks- 1 month. Even if promised a 1 week turnaround. Don't leave important items that are time sensitive in moving truck. Better to ship important documents with authorized insured mail to your new destination (where you have to sign to get the package.) or bring it with you.
